Functional fillers expand the application possibilities of standard polymers

Functional fillers improve or rather change specifically the technical properties of polymers and therefore extend the application possibilities in particular of standard polymers and regranulates. Inorganic solids are predominantly used for these purposes, their specific effect depends on shape, structure, particle size as well as chemical or optical properties, hardness and specific density

Typical fillers and applications:

Talc is lamellar, light weighted with a high aspect ratio and therefore supports the creation of (reinforcing) frame structures in the polymer matrix, this e.g. leads to an improvement of the following material properties:

  • Increase of bending strength and E modulus
  • Improvement of dimensional stability and isotropic shrinkage behavior
  • Improvement of processing, abatement of stringing during sealing applications
  • Increase of heat deflection strength
  • Reduction of gas permeability
  • Increase of IR-reflection
  • Matting of surfaces

Barium sulfate (heavy spar) is used as filler due to its high specific density, to increase the density of polymers. Furthermore, it serves as an X-ray contrast medium to recognize or locate polymer particles in medicine and engineering.

Drying agents consisting of particular processed fillers are capable to absorb permanent chemically and physically huge amounts of water. Water can extremely interfere the processing of plastics and is brought into the manufacturing process by reinforcing agents like talc, regrinds or by insufficient pre-dried polymers.

Magnesium hydroxide is used as filler for the halogen-free, fire-resistant equipment of polyolefin. The combustion energy liberates free water out of the magnesium hydroxide. As a result combustion energy is dissipated and additionally the nascent water vapor acts fire-retardant. Based on the required high dosage of the additive, this filler can only be offered as a compound.

Available carrier polymers: PE, PP, PS, UNI-carrier, others if applicable upon request.
