Fillers without function are used as an extension material to economize polymers and to cheapen the basic material.
However, functional fillers improve or rather change the technical properties of polymers and thereby extend the application possibilities in particular of standard-polymers as well as of re-granulates.
Inorganic components which refill the polymer matrix inhomogeneously are called functional fillers. The effect depends on their shape, structure, grain size as well as on chemical or optical properties, hardness and specific weight. When choosing appropriate fillers for CORDULEN ® and CORDUMA ® efficiency, processability and the cost-performance ratio are important criteria; whereas hardness and abrasion are strictly to consider to avoid engine troubles.
Additives and applications
Antiblock-/Anti-plateout-fillers based on synthetic silica generate a micro-rough surface on polyolefin blown films due to the filler particle structure.
On the surface of some fillers colouring, pigments or additives agglomerate and thus can be dispersed more homogenously and permanently into the polymer matrix. Through that, the dispersion is enhanced and the input quantity of pigments or rather additives can be optimized or reduced.
- improved processability
- thermostability
- increased bending strength and E-module
- improved dimensional stability and isotropic oscillation behaviour
- reduced gas-permeability
- increased IR-reflection
- abatement of stringing during sealing applications
Barium sulfate (heavy spar) is used, due to its high specific weight, to increase the density of polymers and serves furthermore as an X-ray contrast medium to recognize or locate polymer particles.
Drying agent-Masterbatches with particular processed fillers are permanently, chemically and physically able to absorb huge amounts of water. In the plastic processing, water is extremely disturbing and is brought into the manufacturing process by reinforcing agents like talcum, regenerates or by insufficient pre-dried polymers.
Magnesium hydroxide is used as filler for halogen-free, fire-resistant equipage of polyolefins. The combustion energy is setting free combined crystal water. As a result combustion energy is set free; additionally the nascent steam acts fire-retardant.
Based on the required high dosage of the additive, this filler can only be offered as a compound.
Food contact approval
In general, nearly all of the active agents are admitted within the usual dosage, according to the BfR-recommendations.
The particular data can be taken out of the product information sheets.
Approvals of other authorities, especially FDA- and EC-approvals are present in most cases and are available, if required.
